Endive

Salad & baby leaves are easy to grow and can be harvested in a short period, thus enabling them to fit into almost any rotation. They can be sown in relatively small pots and containers or between rows of slower growing species in the garden. Try sowing immediately after early crops i.e. first early potatoes, you should still have time to plant spring cabbage or sow an overwintering green manure once the leaves are harvested. Given the right conditions many species will regrow giving you a second crop if required. On top of this they are highly nutritious and add a new dimension to your diet. Instructions: Cut + rinse + eat! Simple! 

Natural Seed - (Pancaliere/Wallonne) Sow 1cm (^1/2") deep in rows 30cm (1ft) apart. Harvest throughout the autumn and winter. If blanching, tie leaves loosely or cover with a pot to exclude light for three to five weeks before use. This removes the bitterness. Keep soil moist in dry periods to stop bolting. Slug control may be necessary during blanching.

Pelleted Seed - (Korbi RZ/Monaco RZ/Stratego RZ) We are delighted to be able to offer some pelleted endives this season. These pelleted seeds will have a letter P after their codes. 'Pelleted Seed' is simply a seed which has been enclosed within a clay based material, this splits open when water is applied. It makes them easier to see and handle. (Please note, in our range none of these pellets will have been chemically treated and some are in fact organic). These pellets can be spaced more precisely which will reduce the need for thinning and can also be sown direct into module trays.  Sow as for normal endive; however when sowing do not be tempted to bury the pellets too deep, just beneath the surface will suffice.
