Asparagus - Seed

Sow in pots in the greenhouse from February to March maintaining a temperature between 21-27°C (70-80°F) throughout germination and seedling development. Thin seedlings to 7.5 - 10cm (3-4") apart.  Pot-grown plants can be potted on during the year and hardened off. Both can then be planted in their final bed the following April. Prepare the bed in autumn, digging in well rotted manure and removing all perennial weeds. Ground with good drainage is required. Plant the crowns 30cm (1ft) apart with 90cm (3ft) between the rows. Cover the crowns with 5cm (2") of soil initially. Fill in the rest of the trench over the season as the plants grow. Watch out for asparagus beetle and slugs and take appropriate action. Protection from hard frost and strong winds may also be necessary.
