Asparagus Crowns
Prepare the bed in autumn, digging in well rotted manure and removing all perennial weeds. Plant crowns 30cm (1ft) apart in April into ground with good drainage. Leave 90cm (3ft) between the rows. Cover the crowns with 5cm (2") of soil initially. Fill in the rest of the trench over the season as the plants grow. Watch out for asparagus beetle and slugs and take appropriate action. Protection from hard frost and strong winds may also be necessary. Do not harvest spears in the first year, and only a few the following year. After that you should be able to cut succulent spears in bundance for at least 8-10 years. Unpack on arrival, if soil conditions do not allow immediate planting, keep cool and lightly cover with peat.
Please note that although you can order these now, they will not be delivered until the following April as conditions allow.
