Beans - Broad
Sow from late February to June, 5-7.5cm (2-3") deep in double rows 90cm (3ft) between each pair. Seed should be spaced 15-23cm (6-9") apart within the row and the rows should be 23cm (9") apart. Aquadulce can be sown from October to January as soil conditions allow and the Sutton can be sown in the autumn with protection or in a sheltered site from late February to early June, as normal spring beans.
Broad Beans are not fussy as to soil conditions but will reward good preparation and a well drained sunny site. The main pest is black fly which can be avoided by early sowing, followed by pinching out the tops when four trusses have set. You could also try growing Summer Savory with your beans. Keep weeds out of the establishing crop to lessen the effects of Pea and Bean Weevil and ensure you water well when the plant is flowering to encourage pod development. If you cannot plant outside early enough or you have rodent or bird problems, it may be worth starting your beans off inside without heat; harden off and plant out when they are around 15cm (6”) high at the above spacings. If the plants grow tall or your site is particularly exposed you may need to give the plant some support. Useful tip; dig the roots of the bean back into your soil after harvesting to add in matter and nitrogen.
Height 90cm (3ft) unless stated. We give approximate heights for beans as a guide only. The condition of the soil can considerably influence the final crop height.
