Cape Gooseberry / Tomatillo
Sow seed in March in gentle heat, transplant into pots/trays when large enough to handle. Finally plant outdoors in mild areas leaving 75cm (21/2ft) between plants. As a guide, if you can grow outdoor tomatoes then Cape Gooseberry will succeed. In colder areas, grow in a cold greenhouse, but be aware they are fairly large plants. The delicious fruit should be picked when the ‘paper lanterns’ are golden brown. Eat raw, stew or make jams. Stores for a long period if left in husks.
