Squash & Pumpkin
Sow outdoors at the end of May to early June. Plant out greenhouse grown plants in early June. Bush varieties should be spaced 60cm (2ft) apart and trailing varieties 120cm (4ft) apart. They will do best in well manured ground in a sunny sheltered position.
SQUASH & PUMPKIN SUMMER SQUASH Fruits tend to be best when picked just a few days old, very young and tender skinned. The majority are bush rather than trailing vines thus needing less space.
WINTER STORAGE SQUASH These squashes tend to be harvested at a mature stage and have hard skins thus capable of winter storage, they are usually trailing vines. Generally the fruits are best matured on the plant. After harvesting, the fruits should be left to 'cure' in the sun for ten days and protected at night if frost is likely, as frosted fruits will not keep. Store in a well ventilated situation at 7-16ºC (45-60ºF). Should keep until April.
