Peas

Sow 5cm (2") deep in 15cm (6") wide trenches placing seed 7.5cm (3") apart in ‘fives’. The distance between the rows should be equal to the expected height. Round seeded varieties can be sown in the autumn and early spring provided the soil conditions allow. The wrinkled seeded varieties can be sown from March to mid-July, starting and finishing with the quick maturing ‘early’ varieties and using ‘second early’ and ‘maincrop’ types in between. Peas should always be grown in fertile conditions and given adequate support. Never sow peas in cold wet conditions.

Pea moth is the major pest, causing maggots in the pods. The worst effects of the pea moth attack can be avoided by sowing early (October to February) or late (June to July). Good weed control in the establishing crop not only reduces competition for light and nutrients but also keeps the level of pea and bean weevil down. We give approximate heights for Peas as a guide only. The condition of the soil can considerably influence the final crop height.
