Sweet Corn

Sow seed in greenhouse end of April transplanting early June in blocks 45cm (1^1/2ft) between plants; this will assist with pollination.  Alternatively sow in situ end of May, (not 'Super Sweets’). Sweet Corn needs free draining soil with a good humus content and a sunny sheltered site. Earth up stems in summer for better root anchorage.  Frit fly can be a problem but control measures are not usually worthwhile. Please Note: ‘Super Sweet’ varieties should not be grown near ordinary varieties. They also require more favourable conditions particularly from seed sowing through to early establishment. However the resultant crop more than justifies the extra effort.
